Homestyle Amish Sugar Cookies

  • 21⁄3 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon cream of tartar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup confectioners’ sugar 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon lemon extract Sprinkles or sanding sugar


  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the fl our, baking soda, baking powder, cream of tartar, and salt.
  3. In a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream the butter, vegetable oil, granulated sugar, and confectioners’ sugar on medium- high until well combined. Add the egg, vanilla, and lemon extract and beat until well combined. Slowly add the flour mixture and mix until well combined.
  4. Using a cookie scoop, shape the dough into 1-inch balls and place on the prepared baking sheets 2 inches apart. Flatten slightly using the bottom of a glass and top with sprinkles.
  5. Bake for 10 minutes.
  6. Cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Serve.
